New Faculty Members Join the Team

Two new teachers are joining the Huntington School District's faculty team after Huntington School Board members approved long-term substitute appointments for the pair. Lauren Amendola will teach English at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Robert Viera will hold down duties with the Huntington High School art program.

Trustees approved the appointments during a public meeting this past Monday night. The two teachers were recommended to trustees following an extensive screening process.

Lauren Amendola

Ms. Amendola earned a BA degree in May 2009 at Siena College in English education. She is currently studying for a master's degree at Adelphi University.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Amendola was working as an eighth grade literacy teaching assistant in the Bethpage School District. She was a leave replacement English teacher in Bethpage from Sept. 2010 to Feb. 2011. She has also worked as a part-time English teacher in Mineola and an English and special education tutor at Riverside High School.

District officials reviewed 100 resumes and conducted 20 pre-screenings during the hiring process. They interviewed four candidates prior to recommending Ms. Amendola for appointment.

Robert Viera

Mr. Viera obtained a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in May 2008 at the School of Visual Arts, majoring in Illustration. He earned a master's degree in May 2010 at Adelphi University in Art Education.

Mr. Viera has worked in the Commack School District as a preferred art substitute since January 2009, in the Smithtown School District since January 2011 and in the Wantagh School District since December 2010. He also worked as an educational mural artist in Commack from April 2006 to June 2010.

District officials reviewed 130 resumes and conducted 40 pre-screenings during the hiring process. They interviewed nine candidates prior to recommending Mr. Viera for appointment.
