Sayville Tops Blue Devils

It just wasn't Huntington's day as the Sayville boys' soccer team topped the Blue Devils, 4-0. E.J. Connell recorded six saves for Huntington. Fortunately for the Blue Devils, it was a non-league game.

Burnett Stars in Goal

Sophomore Hannah Burnett compiled a dozen saves in goal as the Huntington girls' soccer team shutout Walt Whitman, 2-0. Senior Emilie Pugliese and sophomore Katie Healy scored goals for the Blue Devils.

Healy's first half goal came off a corner throw-in by Pugliese. Senior Cristina Badalamenti picked up an assist.

Ortiz at Molloy

Caitlin Ortiz, a 2009 graduate of Huntington High School, is in her sophomore year at Molloy College in Rockville Centre. She is majoring in biology and is a member of the tennis and softball teams.

During high school, Ortiz played on the Blue Devil tennis, basketball and softball teams. In softball, she earned All-Conference and All-County recognition and was presented with the MVP Award at the senior athletic awards banquet.

As a Molloy freshman, Ortiz played in 12 doubles matches and nine singles flights. She captured a match-clinching 6-4, 6-1 victory against Chestnut Hill College and was part of a doubles team that topped St. Thomas Aquinas College, 8-6. She also played on the first double team that blanked the University of District of Columbia, 8-0. Against the University of New Haven, Ortiz took fourth singles, 7-5, 6-3.

Ortiz also appeared in 10 games for the Molloy softball team, which finished with a 43-21 record and was a real powerhouse.

Satisfying Victory

Christian Caballero and Adil Gowani scored goals and Ricky Velasquez and Carlos Marquez picked up assists as the Huntington boys' soccer team notched a satisfying victory over Copiague, 2-0.

Following a scoreless first half, Velasquez fed the ball to Caballero who put the ball into the net for the game's first goal. Gowani's goal came when he headed the ball into the net off a Marquez's corner kick.

Blue Devil goalie E.J. Connell made four nifty saves to secure the shutout.

Tough One-Goal Loss

It might have been a non-league game, but the loss was still tough to take. Half Hollow Hills West defeated the Huntington girls' soccer team, 1-0 on a goal midway through the second half. Hannah Burnett made nine saves in goal for the Blue Devils.

Finley Football Welcomes Bifulco

Michael Bifulco has been named assistant coach of the J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grade football team. He has coached in the Huntington Bulldogs football program since 2002. He studied business at Suffolk Community College in 2006.

Bifulco will work with Kevin Thorbourne, who is head coach of the Finley-8 football team.

Sponsors Sought for Golf Outing

The Huntington Booster Club is putting the finishing touches on plans for its fourth annual golf outing, which this year will honor longtime district physical education Karen Fischer and athletic coach Todd Jamison.

The October 13th event at Crab Meadow golf course will include 18 holes of golf, lunch and dinner. Participants will have use of the driving range and carts, refreshments along the course and various raffles and prizes. There will also be awards for the longest drive, nearest to the hole and for a hole-in-one.

Registration, lunch and driving range practice will be held between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. A shotgun start will be utilized along with a scramble format. Cocktails, dinner and an awards presentation will be held from 6:30 – 9 p.m. Fischer and Jamison will be feted and they will address what is expected to be a packed clubhouse.

Reservations can be secured by sending a check payable to the Huntington Booster Club, Inc. to P.O. Box 2294, Huntington, NY 11743. The fee for individual golfers is $250 or $1,000 for a foursome. Those wishing to attend only the dinner can do so for $100.

The event is the primary fundraiser for the Huntington Booster Club, which has donated more than $100,000 to the athletic department over the past four years. To help make the day a financial success and to help celebrate Fischer and Jamison's years of service to the district, sponsorships are being solicited.

Ads of various sizes are also being sought for a planned journal, including front page ($250), back cover ($250), full page ($175), half page ($100), quarter page ($75) and business card size ($50). Journal ads can be e-mailed to Booster Club President Barbara Cutrone at Hizees@aol.com.

For more information about sponsorships or participating in the outing contact Carol Scully at (516) 313-8396 or cscully11@verizon.net.

Wilson Looks Forward

Nancy Wilson is looking ahead to next spring when the Huntington High School girls' lacrosse team starts up again. In the meantime, the Blue Devil head coach is content to reflect on the 2009 squad.

"The team was composed of a diverse group of girls who played unselfishly, with spirit and tenacity," said Wilson about this past spring's edition. The Blue Devils looked strong in pre-season scrimmages and then bolted to a 7-3 league record before losing several key starters, including goalie Karly Kocis.

Wilson said it was "tough" to lose so many top players to injury, "however, the girls showed character and integrity by supporting one another and fighting hard to the finish. I loved this team and am proud of their accomplishments."
