Kaplan Named Blue Devil
Girls' BB Coach
Change is coming to the Huntington girls' basketball program. Michael Kaplan has been appointed varsity head coach, replacing Brad Reminick who is taking over the Blue Devil boys' program.
Kaplan comes to Huntington from cross-town rival Harborfields, where he had been working as an assistant coach since 2006. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education at SUNY College at Brockport in 2005.
In college, Kaplan was Brockport's starting point guard for four years and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances where the team reached the "Sweet 16" and the "Elite 8."
Georgia McCarthy, Huntington's district director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics, said she received ten applications for the position.
"I am excited about the upcoming season," Mrs. McCarthy said. "Mike Kaplan brings plenty of basketball game experience to Huntington, along with great knowledge of skill, cardio and muscle strength training. The returning players are excited to work with him and continue our strong girls' basketball tradition."
Kaplan is the owner of Power of One Health and Fitness, where he also works as a personal trainer. He has been an AAU girls' basketball U15 level head coach since 2006.
The new coach inherits a team that finished last season with a 7-7 record in league play and went 9-10 overall. Jackie Waldron, Emma Hayes-Hurley and Raynisha Witherspoon are expected to be the top returning players this winter.
At Harborfields, Kaplan worked closely with head coach Russ Tietjen. The pair developed one of Long Island's premier programs.
