Flower Hill Celebrates American Education Week

Flower Hill School teachers welcomed crowds of parents during American Education Week. As usual, the students were the stars and they shined as the visitors participated in special lessons and watched the youngsters enjoy a Thanksgiving feast a few days early.
"Classrooms were brimming with excitement as parents came to participate and observe their children learn during their normal daily routines," said Erika Sabogal, a kindergarten dual language teacher at the school.
Individual teachers varied their classroom activities, ranging from a writer's workshop to cooperative learning groups in math. Some kindergarteners worked in cooperative learning centers focused on food, family, Pilgrims and Native Americans.
Students got into the spirit of the occasion by wearing turkey headpieces and creating placemats featuring their handprints in the form of turkeys. Parents ate it all up, snapping photos and generally enjoying their time visiting the school.
The week's activities culminated with Flower Hill's annual Thanksgiving feast. The extravaganza is held in the school gym and features a traditional Thanksgiving menu of turkey, mashed potatoes and corn. Students sat at long, family style tables. The gym walls were decorated with colorful works of art created by the youngsters themselves.
"We were very happy to have so many parents visit Flower Hill during the week," Principal Marlon Small said. "The students love seeing their parents at school and enjoy the attention."
