Blue Devil Soccer Alumni in Overtime Game

It was a game for the ages. Huntington High School boys’ soccer team alumni returned to Blue Devil Stadium last weekend for a friendly contest that soon took on the tone of a state championship battle.

When the final whistle sounded, the new guard “Blue” squad had nipped the veteran “White” team in overtime, 4-3. Alex Brown scored the game-winner in the 92nd minute of play off a through ball by Sam Michaels

Blue Devil head coach John Pagano called it a “thrilling finish” and the 40 players who returned to their alma mater for the day would probably readily agree with that assessment.

This year’s contest marked the third edition of the alumni game. It has taken off in popularity since Pagano instituted it. Graduates dating back to Huntington’s Class of 1999 answered the call and seemed to really enjoy the reunion.

The game itself was remarkably well played. Dan Ellman opened the scoring for the “White” team, which also received second-half goals from Jacob Bluestone and Ralph Carino.

Ellman is currently attending the University of Michigan’s School of Law after earning an undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College, but apparently has lost few, if any, of his soccer skills. Fellow alums also seemed to summon a reserve of energy when they needed it.

Henry Cesaire, Blue Devil varsity assistant coach Jason Suarez and Matt Scott scored goals for the “Blue” team.
