Tenure Reception Planned for Faculty

A long list of Huntington faculty members will be on the School Board agenda on Monday, June 7 as they near coveted tenure appointments in their respective departments. The district will hold a reception in their honor at 6:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams Intermediate School cafeteria. The formal meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

New York State Education Law provides for teachers and administrators to serve up to a three-year probationary period before being eligible to receive a tenure appointment. During this time they are subjected to intensive observation and evaluation and can be dismissed for virtually any reason. (Faculty members who have previously received tenure in New York State are required to serve up to two years while on probation.)

Typically, the effective date for each of the tenure appointments will be September 1. Several of the teachers who will be honored received tenure during the current school year as a result of being initially hired mid-year.

Superintendent John J. Finello is expected to speak to those in attendance. Trustees will vote on the tenure appointments shortly after the start of the June 7 meeting.
