Blue Devil Senior Athletic Banquet to be held June 3
The 42nd annual Blue Devil Senior Athletic Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, June 3 at 6 p.m. in the Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. Parents and supporters of the athletic program can purchase tickets by calling the athletic office at 673-2018.
Former Huntington District Director of Physical Education and Athletics Ray Deren created the annual banquet in 1969 to recognize and honor senior students who had participated in athletics. Mr. Deren was a pioneer who helped lift the Huntington athletic program into the elite circle of New York’s best, developing a full slate of not only boys’ teams but a long list of girls’ sports and junior high athletics.
During Mr. Deren’s tenure the number of athletic teams sponsored by the district skyrocketed from 28 to 70 and the program was seen as a model by districts across the state. With a great deal of foresight, he identified the need for a full-time athletic trainer, a first for a Long Island high school, writing the job description for the position. He was equally committed to improving the district’s sports facilities.
Blue Devil coaches will present awards to the top seniors on their teams. Numerous special awards will also be presented, including scholarships in memory of Mr. Deren and former Huntington teacher, coach and athletic director William Class.
