Blue Devil Duo Honored by Town Board

Jeremy Rhodes and Johanna Clifford, two of the top student-athletes in Huntington High School’s Class of 2010, were among a select group of seniors honored by the Huntington Town Board for “exemplifying outstanding academic and athletic achievement among the town’s secondary school students.”

Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello was in attendance, which was only fitting since both Mr. Rhodes and Ms. Clifford attended Washington Elementary School while Mr. Finello was principal there.

“It is a delight to have watched Jeremy and Johanna grow into such fine teenagers,” Mr. Finello said. “They are wonderful representatives of our district and their achievements are quite impressive.”

Mr. Rhodes is clearly one of Huntington’s very best. He has challenged himself with honors and Advanced Placement courses and compiled a grade point average of 95.84. A member of the high honor roll since seventh grade, the teenager will begin studies in Villanova University’s School of Business in the fall.

A starter on the Huntington varsity volleyball, golf and basketball teams, Mr. Rhodes led the golf squad in overall victories and captained the Blue Devil basketball team. He earned a spot on the Suffolk Academic All-County basketball team.

Ms. Clifford is an academic powerhouse, qualifying for the high honor roll every single marking period since seventh grade. Her grade point average of 102.84 places her near the top of Huntington’s senior class.

Enrolled in a full schedule of AP courses, Ms. Clifford has been serving as treasurer of the Grandfriends club, vice-president of the horticulture club and secretary of the Youth for Human Rights club while also playing in five different music groups. She’s been integrally involved in National History Day at the high school and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Math, Spanish, Science, Tri-M and English honor societies.

A six-year member of the Blue Devil varsity fencing team, Ms. Clifford won all-county honors three times in the sport and is a two-time Suffolk finalist. She helped lead Huntington to a county runner-up team finish last winter.

“She captained a team that had 21 new members and lead the way keeping the experienced girls on track and introducing the new girls in to the fold,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, Huntington’s director of athletics. “The coaching staff says she’s one of the all-time best.”

Ms. Clifford will be attending Case Western Reserve University in the fall. She plans to major in biomedical engineering.

Every high school in the town nominated two seniors, one male and one female, for the award. Reinwald’s Bakery and Bon Bons Chocolatier donated refreshments for the awards ceremony
