Spotlight on Huntington Photographer E.J. Connell

It isn’t always easy to impress teenagers but E.J. Connell has done just that. The Huntington High School junior has gained the respect of classmates in more ways than one. His photography is much appreciated and widely admired. He’s very good at his craft and everyone knows it.

Mr. Connell is also a humble sort of guy and loves to learn new techniques and fiddle around with new equipment. He likes to push the envelope and finds new ways to add different dimensions to his work. He has a great sense of humor and is a world traveler, too, having participated in a trip this year to southern Italy from Rome to Sicily.

A valued staff member of The Huntingtonian, the high school yearbook, Mr. Connell will be the sports editor of the 2011 edition.

Photography teacher Pam Piffard on E.J. Connell . . .

“E.J. is a very talented photographer. He has a clear vision about what he will do and where he will go with his artwork. E.J. regularly practices his skills and his portfolio is a beautiful display of his talents.”

Connell: I’m 16 and in 11th grade.

Q: How did you first get interested in photography?

Connell: I first became interested in photography when I got my dad’s old camera in the summer following 9th grade. Ever since then I’ve loved taking pictures.

Q: Where do you get your ideas?

Connell: I get my ideas from skateboarding magazines and bands. But most of my ideas just pop into my head when I see the thing I want to shoot.

Q: Is there any specific type of photography you like best?

Connell: I like action and sports photography the best. It’s the most fun to shoot because you get different pictures every time since your timing changes and the action changes.

Q: How has the Huntington photography program helped you with your love of photography?

Connell: It has helped tremendously. It gives me a place to edit my pictures and to get a professional opinion on my pictures. It has also taught me more about photography than I knew before I took the class.

Q: Do you plan to continue with photography or go to school for it?

Connell: Yes I plan on going to school for it. I want to work for a skateboarding magazine or company when I graduate from college. I am also thinking about becoming a photography teacher.
