Huntington School Board Notes
Longtime Jack Abrams Intermediate School teacher aide Marva Maddox and J. Taylor Finley Middle School home and career skills teacher Monica Rea are both retiring, effective June 30. Their respective retirement requests were approved at a May 10 meeting of the Huntington School Board
Trustees approved long term substitute teacher appointments for classroom teacher Denise Novello (Washington School: May 14-June 25), special education teacher Lisa Karasik (Washington School: April 30-June 25) and social studies teacher Rui Correia (Finley: beginning May 3 and extending indefinitely).
Louise Sugrue (Jefferson School, reading) and Carrie Postel (Jack Abrams School, physical education) were approved to return from child care related leaves of absence, effective September 1, 2010.
Trustees also accepted resignations from Jack Abrams School security guard Jeremy Pellot, Finley food service worker josh McIntosh and Jack Abrams School teacher’s assistant Erin O’Leary.
The positions of 15 teachers were declared excess by Huntington School Board members. The faculty members include elementary classroom teachers Victoria Creighton (Jack Abrams School), Marisa Damiano (Jefferson), Conrad Dierking (Woodhull), Vincenza Famiglietti Caruso (Woodhull), Robert Gruebel (Woodhull), Kathryn Joseph (Washington), Kristin Kopf (Flower Hill), , Laura Lipow (Woodhull), Elizabeth Moran (Washington) and Heather Spatafora (Jack Abrams School); social studies teacher Gene Acevedo (high school); foreign language teacher Joan Anderson (Finley); special education teachers Jessie Brennan (Southdown) and Joan Castles (high school) and guidance counselor Casey Horowitz (high school). The effective date for the action is June 30 with the exception of the position of Ms. Horowitz, whose position has been declared excess as of January 28, 2011.
Trustees also took the following actions:
• Approved two budget transfers in the amount of $500 to cover the costs associated with a bulk June mailing for J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
• Authorized Creative Tutoring, Syosset Tutoring, Islip Tutoring and Top Grade Tutoring to provide home tutoring services.
• Approved a special education services contract with the Jericho School District.
• Awarded a bid for the printing of the 2010/11 district calendar to Tobay Printing Company. Based upon a run of 15,500 copies, the 2/2 process will cost $6,131 while the 4/2 process is priced at $6,398.
• Approved a consultant educational services contract with The Eden II/The Genesis Programs.
• Awarded a bid for the printing of 2010/11 student agenda books to School Mate for Flower Hill and Jefferson schools at a price of $598.50 each; School Datebooks for Southdown School at a price of $390; KTS Agendas for Woodhull School ($1,210), Finley Middle School ($2,160) and Huntington High School ($2,940).
• The positions of 9 teacher aides were declared excess by Huntington School Board members. The individuals currently filling these positions include Doreatha Bailey (high school), Annie Bastien (Southdown), Karen Beirne (Flower Hill), Yvonne Dacosta (Washington), Melissa Goldsborough (Jack Abrams School), Alison Moller (Flower Hill), Andrea Myssiorek (high school), Christopher Obi (Finley) and Angela Rogan (Washington).
• Approved a contract with Sheehan & Company for internal audit services for the year ending June 30, 2011. The contract authorizes a maximum fee of $40,000.
• Authorized numerous additions to the district’s list of substitute employees including teachers Jennifer Fudens, Heather Gebhardt, Alan Hinkson and Joshua Tenzer’ food service worker Claudia Conteras; and custodians Robert Carson and Timothy Gonyou. Sub teachers are paid $90 per diem, sub food service workers earn $8.75 per hour while sub custodians are paid $10.50 per hour.
• Approved consultant services contracts with Odile Montel (French) and Gloria Heidengren (German) related to translating for testing. They will be paid $48.01 per hour when needed.
• Authorized the disposal of a Boxlight projector and Eikivision VHS viewer at the request of Huntington High School librarian Camille DeCanio. Each item is broken and beyond repair.
• Approved the recall of study hall and hallway assistant Maria Oliva, effective September 1. Ms. Oliva’s position had previously been declared excess by trustees.
• Awarded bids for the disposal of surplus equipment to R. Marino ($45) and Mid-Island Salvage Corp. ($80.37).
• Accepted the resignations of high school special education teachers Jennifer Giglio, and Christopher Pellegrino and ESL teacher Terrence Judson, effective June 30.
• Authorized Joan Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts, to provide up to eight hours of professional development activities at a rate of pay of $75 per hour.
• Approved Finley Middle School teacher Sharon Holly to provide up to 35 hours of peer mediation activities at a rate of pay of $48.01 per hour. The stipend is covered by a Title IV Safe and Drug Free Schools grant.
