Eye-Opening Educational Forum
on June 1

Alarmed by increased rates of heroin and prescription drug abuse by young people across the country, the Huntington School District and the Huntington PTA Council are collaborating on what’s billed as an “eye-opening” educational forum on June 1 at 7 p.m. at Huntington High School. Parents, students and community members are invited to attend.

The evening will feature a variety of presentations, including:

• Dr. Stephen Dewey: A neuroscientist at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore/Long Island Jewish Hospitals, Dr. Dewey is an expert in his field. He will discuss various forms of substance abuse and their effects on the teenage brain.

• Daytop Village Parents Educating Parents program: This segment will feature testimonials from recovering teenagers and their parents as well as remarks by a Daytop counselor.

The Suffolk Sheriff’s Department will be on the scene to collect unused and expired medications, which will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. “Emptying your medicine cabinet of unwanted medications can prevent an overdose by a teenager experimenting with their parents’ or family member’s medication,” according to a letter sent to parents by the Huntington Safe & Drug Free Schools Parent’s Committee and the Huntington PTA Council.

Huntington School District counselors and local agency staff members will also be on hand to answer questions and share available information.

Contact district social workers Vic Matarasso (673-2011) or Kathryn Costa (673-2022) for more information.
