Ron Wilson Down but Not Out

Ron Wilson is such an optimistic person that not even a devastating fire that destroyed his home can suppress his positive personality. The mid-afternoon April 1 blaze forced the popular Huntington High School dean and athletic coach to live in a hotel for several weeks before State Farm Insurance located a rental house in Melville two weeks ago.
The long process of rebuilding Mr. Wilson’s home is expected to take at least seven months. “We will be staying in the rental house until the repairs are done on our home,” he said. “I met with my building contractor who is applying for the necessary permits next week. My guess is that they will start on the house by the end of the month.”
Mr. Wilson has taught at Flower Hill School and Jack Abrams Intermediate School and is in his first year as one of three high school deans. He also coaches football and boys’ winter and spring track.
“As much as I like this rental house that we’re in, I would rather be back in my own home,” Mr. Wilson said. “The worst part about all of this is being at an inconvenience. We are just now starting to get back into some type of normalcy or routine around here.”
When news of the fire spread, Mr. Wilson’s colleagues rallied to his side. “I’m very grateful to every faculty and staff member of the Huntington School District, families of athletes and to the mentors of the Earn and Learn program who have been very kind and generous to me and my family,” he said. “I count it a blessing to be surrounded by such warm, caring and loving people.”
