Contingency Budget Cuts Spread Over Three Areas

If the Huntington School District is forced to operate on a contingency budget during the 2010/11 school year, New York State law dictates substantial cuts to the plan that residents will vote on next Tuesday, May 18.
Should voters fail to pass a budget this year, Huntington School Board members must enact spending reductions totaling $3,564,539, spread over three broad areas: administrative ($367,479), program ($2,803,535) and capital ($393,525).
“These will be real cuts and felt by everyone,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. Trustees have been trimming spending for several years in an effort to hold down property taxes. As such, the choice of where to cut has become much more difficult.
“Our district has always followed conservative financial practices,” Mr. Finello said. “A contingency budget will force some really tough choices that will impact every grade level.”
