Huntington Duo Wins Brookhaven Lab Honors

Huntington students Matthew Quinn and Candice Garger earned honorable mention recognition at this year’s Brookhaven National Lab elementary science fair, placing the pair among Long Island’s best.
Mr. Quinn, a Flower Hill School third grader and Ms. Garger, a fourth grader at Woodhull Intermediate School, were among a talented group of Huntington students who advanced to the prestigious competition after winning top honors at science fairs in their respective school buildings.
The BNL competition drew a field filled with exceptional students and projects. “This is a great opportunity for all of the district’s students, whether they won or not,” said David Casamento, Huntington’s district director of science and instructional technology.
It is estimated that over 25,000 students participated in science fairs throughout Suffolk County this year. Mr. Quinn was one of ten honorable mention award winners out of 90 third grade participants. Ms. Garger was one of just eight honorable mention winners out of 65 fourth graders at the Brookhaven competition.
“The students who did win at their respective buildings and attended the Brookhaven science fair were treated to a great day at a national laboratory,” Mr. Casamento said. “All of them have returned to the district even more excited about science than when they left.”
The Huntington contingent attending the competition was impressed. Southdown parent Gabrielle Harrington called it “a wonderful experience for students and their families. There was a giant flashing sign congratulating all the winners and each participant was warmly welcomed and given a certificate to commemorate their win as we entered. On display were unbelievable experiments and beautiful presentations. Later, all of the students were given a red ribbon and invited to stand on the stage to be honored.”
“Congratulations to every student who performed an individual experiment this year,” Mr. Casamento said in reference to all Huntington youngsters. “All of us hope there will be even greater participation next year.”
