Food Drive Set for May 18 at Budget Vote
With the sour economy continuing to hit the stocks of local food pantries hard, Huntington School District teachers are organizing a food drive that will culminate on May 18 at Huntington High School as residents go to the polls to vote on the proposed school budget and to elect two trustees.
Teachers plan to set-up a table outdoors near the high school lobby on the day of balloting for community members to drop off non-perishable items during a three-hour period from 3-6 p.m. The food will be picked up that same day by the Helping Hand Rescue Mission and be earmarked for local folks and families who are going hungry.
Faculty members will initially collect goods among themselves for several days before reaching out to local residents. “We encourage everyone in the community to join us and help those in need,” said Georganne White, who serves as the primary school level vice-president of the Associated Teachers of Huntington, the professional organization for district faculty members.
Teachers across the state are encouraged to hold at least one food drive a year to benefit their communities. Ms. White keeps an ear to the ground when it comes to community food pantries and when she heard of the dire need for items, she threw her support behind the drive.
Lead teachers for the drive will head the effort in each of the district’s eight buildings. Participants in the food collection on May 18 will be given a free raffle chance for a “family fun basket.”
Teachers from across the district will man the collection table in shifts during the three-hour period. Ms. White called the effort “such a worthy cause” and said that “Huntington is a community in need.” Faculty members hope the food collection makes the struggle so many are going through during a little more bearable.
