Southdown Cocoa House Showcases Kids

Every school has its own special nights and unique events. The Southdown School Cocoa House is just the type of memorable evening that results in fun for students and parents alike.

It’s an annual event that was created by Southdown’s Shared Decision Making Committee as a fundraiser to cover costs associated with printing the school’s art and literary magazine.

“The event celebrates all of our artists, musicians, dancers, poets and authors,” Southdown Principal Michelle Marino said. “The gym is completely transformed into a ‘groovy’ cocoa house and the children perform for their peers and families. Surrounding the performers is amazing artwork, also submitted by the children.”

The sixth annual Cocoa House extravaganza featured pianists, violinists, martial arts demonstrations, singers and several authors reading their poems and short stories. Tables were arranged in a way that provided the look of a large café. Audience members downed hot cocoa and home baked goodies as they relaxed and were entertained by talented youngsters.

While the night is officially a fundraiser it serves as even more of a showcase. More than 125 families turned out for the fun evening.

Southdown’s Art and Literary Committee coordinated the event and members volunteered hours of their time ensuring its success. The magazine annually features art, poems and enchanting stories from every Southdown student. “Upon publication, copies are distributed to all students and everyone walks around with an extra spring in their step, after all, they’re truly published,” Mrs. Marino said.
