Bible as Literature at Huntington High School

Huntington High School’s Bible as Literature course once again proved to be very popular among students. The course is offered during the fall semester. Students meet daily and receive a half-credit upon successful completion. Faculty members Mike Schwendemann and Kelly Krycinski taught sections of the course this year.

Teachers use a variety of methods to drive home important lessons. For example, in the past, students have experienced the cuisine of biblical days in a mini-class learning experience and later attended a screening of “The Nativity.”

The course focuses on the Bible itself, its history, authors, literary forms, techniques and the people and places introduced through it. Stories are approached in terms of plot, characters, setting and theme. Poetry is analyzed in terms of imagery and parallelism; drama in terms of conflict and character; prophetic literature is studied for the content of the message and for the style of the individual prophet.

Wisdom literature is approached from the universality of its themes and imagery. The Gospels, Acts and Epistles are studied for the diversity of the narrative style, point of view and purpose; the Apocalypse for its rich imagery, allusions and symbolism. A research paper is required.
