Jack Abrams School Celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day was observed at Jack Abrams Intermediate School with a variety of activities that ranged from environmentally themed puppet shows to flower planting and garden clean-ups.
Teacher Heather Spatafora’s class created its own puppet shows, complete with characters and scripts, focused on an Earth Day message. In keeping with the thrust of the day, the puppets were comprised of recycled materials.
Jack Abrams School students spent time on numerous beautification projects, including planting flowers, prepping garden areas, scooping up debris and generally making the school grounds look more attractive.
Students in teachers Patty Hearn and Paul Gasparino’s class installed plantings near the building’s main entrance. Tulips and other flowers were also put into the ground near the fourth grade entrance.
Suffolk Police officer Drew Fiorello even grabbed a shovel and helped fourth grader William Fallon dig a hole for an azalea flowering shrub. “We try to plant perennials so each year our students see our gardens grow,” said Mary Stokkers, principal of Jack Abrams Intermediate School.
According to the website www.earthday.org, “Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents the greatest opportunity – an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future.”
The Earth Day 2010 website estimated that more than one billion people in 190 countries participated in a variety of activities on April 22, which was billed as “a pivotal opportunity for individuals, corporations and governments to join together and create a global green economy.”
