Southdown Idol a Winning Evening

This year’s Southdown Idol had it all, from dancing, skits and even gymnastics to renditions of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” Owl City’s “Fireflies” and “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from Broadway, plus lots more. A crowded school gym rocked as students had a blast.

The lip sync show was emceed by students Alex Wakhale and Luke Luckow and physical education teachers Theresa Matthews and Chris Taylor. PTA volunteers Kim Cousins, Jeannie Dempsey and Valerie Kellogg coordinated the evening.

“It is so cute to see the children get so excited about performing,” Mrs. Cousins said. “They’re already talking about what acts they are going to be doing next year and with whom.”

“This show has become a favorite activity for our students and families,” Southdown Principal Michelle Marino said. “The children begin weeks prior to their performance, forming groups, creating dance routines, putting together costumes and practicing, practicing, and more practicing. Although the performances are wonderful, I truly enjoy watching the real learning take place, that of getting ready. All kinds of good learning opportunities present themselves - negotiating, compromising, cooperating, problem-solving and fortitude.”

The routines were well-rehearsed and the big crowd appreciated the efforts of the performers. The program moved right along and was all wrapped up by about 8:15 p.m.

“It’s a winning evening when all of our kids are stars,” Mrs. Marino said.
