Intriguing Projects at Jack Abrams School Science Fair

Miranda Nykolyn and Julia Macedonio won coveted blue ribbons in the Jack Abrams School science fair and will advance to a regional competition at the prestigious Brookhaven National Laboratory.
This year’s science fair at the school attracted 200 entries. Sixth graders are required to do a project individually or with a partner. Fourth and fifth graders can submit group or individual projects. The work, which was put on display for classmates, parents and faculty to peruse, was thoughtful and quite detailed.
The annual event is coordinated by Jack Abrams School sixth grade teachers Allison VonVange and Cristina Anderson. The pair also served as judges for the competition along with David Casamento, district director of science and instructional technology.
Earning honorable mention honors at the fair were Cooper Cook, Sam Latt, Julio Colon, Jack Gallagher, Cole Blackburn, Annalise Mozer, Wilber Parada, Kelly Palladino, Dylan Delgiudice, Sam Weitzner, Logan Rice, Halle Raskin, Jonathan Schechter, Dawson Wallace, Zion Moore and Sofia Suarez.
Ms. Nykolyn is a fifth grader in teacher Jason Suarez’s class. She studied whether fragrance affects a person’s mood. Ms. Macedonio, a sixth grader in a class taught by Mrs. Anderson and Carol Anne Kinane, compared organic fertilizers to commercial versions.
Increased emphasis is being placed on science study in Huntington’s elementary schools this year. Mr. Casamento is fond of saying this “is a science community” and it’s true that residents have long valued the academic discipline and supported a strong science program in the district.
