New “Rockapella” Class in the Summer Arts Program
As registration continues for the OOMPAH summer arts program in the Huntington School District, students and their parents are considering from among the time-honored courses that have proved popular through the years and several new classes that are provoking excitement.
One of the new classes is Huntington’s “Rockapella” for students in grades six through nine. The course will run in the 11:00 – 11:50 a.m. time slot, Monday through Friday during the summer program, which runs from June 28 through July 23.
“Through pop tunes, TV show and movie them songs and traditional unaccompanied choral pieces our students will become an ‘a cappella’ group,” according to the summer arts program guide. “An ‘a cappella’ group produces music and sounds using only their voices. They will ‘beat box,’ sing in multiple parts and learn to manipulate their voices to create sounds that we thought could only be created in a music studio.”
Students entering grades 4-9 are eligible for the summer arts program and can register for up to four courses. Registration for classes is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. Students from surrounding school districts are also welcome, provided they supply their own instrument for music related classes.
The “Rockpella” class is expected to be among this summer’s favorites. “Students will get to name their group, learn the basics of ‘a cappella’ singing and improvise and create songs” in the class, according to the course guide.
There is a $95 fee for each summer course, which is identical to last year’s and includes all supplies and an OOMPAH (Organization of Music Parents of Huntington) t-shirt. A $45 registration fee will also be assessed to cover course materials. There is a family discount of $50 for each additional child registering for four classes.
