Winter Season Participation Increases at Finley

There are 101 students participating in the second winter athletic season at J. Taylor Finley Middle School this year, including 49 athletes on the wrestling team.
A report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy indicates there are 68 participants on the two Winter II boys’ teams and 33 members of the two girls’ teams.
There are two separate winter seasons on the middle school level, generally referred to as “early” and “late.” Thus, middle school students have the opportunity to participate on four different teams during the school year, providing them with a chance to try many different sports.
The seventh grade girls’ basketball team had 41 students try-out and 16 make the squad. The eighth grade team in the same sport had 39 athletes show up for try-outs and 17 selected for the final roster.
In addition to wrestling, 25 boys tried out for a combination seventh and eighth grade volleyball team and 19 made that squad.
During a comparable period last year a total of 80 Finley students could be found on the Winter II season rosters. The more than 20 percent increase in participation has been welcomed by Falcon coaches.
Tryouts for the spring season at Finley will get underway on Tuesday, April 6. For more information contact the athletic office at 673-2018.
