It’s a Wrap for Blue Devil Boys’ Winter Track

What wasn’t to like about the Huntington boys’ winter track and field season that recently wrapped up? Head coach Ron Wilson is not complaining with the effort and performance of his 32-man squad. He feels good about the year and confident about the program’s future.
“We were a very young, but talented team,” Wilson said. “These young men gave their best efforts every time they stepped out on the track. They didn’t care that the opposition was older, stronger, faster or even more experienced. They were definitely a team that realized every day was an opportunity to change things for the better. By the end of the season, they had all surpassed their own personal records.”
The Blue Devils finished up with a second place showing in the league championships, but the real story this season was the performance of a dominant group of sophomores who placed first in the Suffolk Frosh/Soph Championship, besting their nearest competition by more than 30 points.
Where does Huntington go from here? “Tyriek Johnson should definitely be a state qualifier in the hurdles and possibly in the long jump, as well,” Wilson said. “Jared Thorbourne did a superb job in the 600m dash and should return next year with some experience. Ryan Ackerman, Brad Dwyer and Tyler Wolfe, our distance trio, should also look to improve and make a run for the county championships late in the season.”
Wilson is also pleased with shot put throwers Richie Fernandez, Trayvon Toney and Danny Plant who “made some great strides through the season and should definitely be bigger and stronger and be county champion contenders.”
Speedy sophomore spring Tyre Brown made his track debut this past winter and is expected to be much improved next year. “He was sophomore champion in the 55m dash and should return with some hopes of participating in the county championship,” Wilson said.
Conor Reilly, Matthew Poellnitz, Dante Allen and Stevenson Gabriel will also be among the leading next winter. With only three seniors on the team, the Blue Devils have much to look forward to.
