K Buddies at Southdown School

It’s downright heartwarming to see the third graders at Southdown Primary School working with kindergarten students as the youngsters focus on various projects at their small desks.
The common experience is billed K Buddies and brings together the two groups once each month. “It could be anything from language arts to a holiday craft, but the objectives are always the same,” Southdown Principal Michelle Marino said. “For students to practice active listening, taking turns, knowing how to ask questions and, of course, respectful, responsible and safe words and actions.”
Southdown teachers say K Buddies has been “extremely successful” for everyone involved. “The youngest children look forward to spending time with their third grader and have been inspired by their knowledge and support,” Mrs. Marino said. “On the other hand, the third graders have thoroughly enjoyed working with the kindergartners and knowing that they are helping to encourage and inspire our youngest ones while building their own confidence and knowledge. It’s a win-win.”
Mrs. Marino and Southdown’s faculty, support staff and parents always seem to find a way to achieve the school’s goals and make the day fun for the students who pack the building’s classrooms.
Since the school’s doors first opened in September 1954, it’s held a special place in the lives of the community members who have been educated there and still remember it fondly decades later.
