Thorbourne is Multi-Talented
Huntington sophomore Jared Thorbourne enjoyed a fine winter track and field season, excelling as a distance runner, sprinter and member of the 4 x 200m relay team. He was the “sophomore division” champion in the 600m run and went on to capture All-League honors in the 600m run (1:31 and the relay (1:38.9).
“Thorbourne is a multi-talented athlete,” head coach Ron Wilson said. “He has the endurance to last and the speed to get there fast. Determined plus hard worker equals a great athlete and a better person! A coach’s dream.”
Wolfe on the Prowl
He’s just an eighth grader but Tyler Wolfe can’t be ignored by his opponents after turning in a solid season with the Blue Devil winter track and field team.
“Wolfe is a very talented distance runner who’s going to make a lot of noise in upcoming years at the high school,” head coach Ron Wilson said. Affectionately known as “Prodigy” by his teammates, Wolfe excelled in a number of events and was a member of Huntington’s 4 x 800m relay.
“He’s a tough kid that gives his best effort every time he steps onto the track,” Wilson said. “He’s the sleeper; the one to watch in upcoming years.”
School Records Fall
This year’s Huntington girls’ winter track and field team broke three different school records. Dania Merilan set a new mark in the 300m run when she circled the distance in 44.35 seconds. The 4 x 200m relay team consisting of Merilan, Hannah Helrich, Cristina Badalamenti and Alexandra Krapf established a new record in that event, crossing the finish line in 1:53.34 at the state qualifier on February 9. Helrich also shattered the school record in the triple jump by leaping 33’6½ in a January 14 crossover meet.
The Blue Devils were coached by Debra Cheskes and Josh Baravarian.
Girls’ Fencers Finish at 9-5
The Huntington girls’ fencing team enjoyed a very fine season, finishing third in the league and second in the Suffolk championships. The 37-member squad was captained by Johanna Clifford, Lena Freed, Brittany Pucci-Schmitz and Alanna Tieman.
The Blue Devils closed out the regular season with a record of 9-5. In the Section XI tournament, Olivia Weller won the county crown in epee and added All-Long Island honors. Tieman and Clifford grabbed second team All-County honors in epee.
Pucci-Schmitz, Freed and Alexandra Martinolich were all honorable mention All-County in foil and Katia DeSimone was honorable mention All-County in saber.
Huntington is coached by Alan Kuver, Mike Fabio and Valinda O’Garra.

In accordance with the teacher’s contract, Huntington School Board members approved post-season pay for Blue Devil coaches Ron Wilson (boys’ winter track), Debra Cheskes (girls’ winter track), Brad Reminick (girls’ basketball), Jill Beck (girls’ basketball) and Gil Smith (boys’ swimming), who worked beyond the end of the regular season in their respective sport.
Top Freshman Swimmer
Huntington High School boys’ swimming coach Gil Smith regards Thomas Scott as the best freshman swimmer on the team. Scott earned All-League honors this past season and is an “all-around swimmer in all four strokes,” said Smith.
Scott qualified for the county championship in his first varsity season, placing 11th in the breaststroke. He also shined during the winter in the 200 IM and as a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
