Attractive Display Celebrates Black History Month

In recent weeks the main lobby at Huntington High School has showcased an attractive display of items celebrating the contributions and culture of leading people of color in the United States.
The Rev. Bernadette Watkins of Huntington Outreach Ministries created the showcase and displays. She said most of the items are from her own collection, with a few borrowed from friends. “I wanted to do something special to raise the profile of Black History Month at the school,” Rev. Watkins said.
The display features photos, books, arts and crafts, posters, jewelry, figurines, carvings, compact discs, masks, dolls and statues. Individual profiles and photos of great Americans of color have been affixed to the wood pillars in the lobby.
Principal Carmela Leonardi added to the month’s higher profile by performing short daily readings over the school’s public address system each morning, celebrating the African American experience in this country.
Rev. Watkins said she also provided the high school with written materials meant to inform, educate and stimulate discussions. “Next year we are going to do even more,” she said.
