Silverman Grabs Sammis Prize
for English
Rebecca Silverman has been garnering plenty of awards this spring. That’s not surprising since the Huntington High School Class of 2010 valedictorian is an intellectual powerhouse. She’s headed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where everyone expects her to continue smashing through every barrier she encounters.
At this month’s senior academic awards night in the high school auditorium, Ms. Silverman walked away with an armful of honors. One of them, the Sammis Prize in English, is reserved for an outstanding senior who demonstrates not only excellence in English Language Arts, as evidenced by top grades and teacher recommendations, but also a genuine passion for the study of language and literature.
English teacher Michael Schwendemann, who presented the Sammis Prize on behalf of his department, said Ms. Silverman “meets and exceeds” the criteria for the award. The senior will be giving the valedictory address at Friday’s night’s commencement exercises in Blue Devil Stadium.
“With a spirit of inquiry that leads her to examine every avenue of literary criticism, Rebecca is a most deserving recipient,” Mr. Schwendemann said. “With a humility that allows her to admit that she often doesn’t ‘get’ why authors include so much pain and suffering in their novels, Rebecca is a most deserving recipient. And with a commitment to excellence that compels her to revise papers as many times as needed to achieve clarity and style, Rebecca is a most deserving recipient.”
