Huntington School Briefs

 

Huntington High School’s English honor society announced its slate of officers for the 2010/11 school year. The group includes Allison Kiley (president), Amy Eisen (vice-president), Michael Valente (secretary), Andrew Ku (treasurer) and David Stillman (historian).

Election Results Certified

The results of the May 18 budget vote and trustee election were certified by Huntington School Board members. The budget passed by a vote of 2,445-1,662. Richard McGrath (2,432) and John P. Paci III (2,070) were re-elected to new three-year terms. Challenger Adam Spector received 2,066 votes. There was one write-in ballot cast for Phyllis Castorina.

Math Olympiad Team Amazing

Huntington’s sixth grade Math Olympiad team was simply amazing this year, earning High Achievement honors in a competition that drew more than 150,000 students across the country.

 

The individual Huntington team members qualifying for the high achievement category include Cole Blackburn, Sam Latt, Jack Gallagher, Summer Hushion, Spencer Pashkin, Alexandra Koumas, Dylan DelGiudice, Stefano Ornato, Justin Meyer, Nancy Fallon and Savannah Richardson.

Memo of Agreements

Huntington School Board members approved a pair of memorandums of agreement at their June 7 meeting. The contract settlement with the custodial unit is retroactive to July 1, 2008 and runs through June 30, 2010. It includes a raise of two percent in the first year and one percent in the current year.

 

A contract settlement with the secondary study hall and hallway assistant bargaining unit is retroactive to July 1, 2007 and it, too, runs through June 30, 2010. It provides for a 3.5 percent increase in the first year, two percent in the second and one percent in the current year.

SHS Officers Lead Way

This year’s Huntington High School Spanish honor society has a long list of accomplishments under its belt. The organization benefitted from the strong leadership provided by officers Sara Lustberg (president), Rebecca Silverman (vice-president), Luis Fernando Cordero (treasurer), Casey Singer (recording secretary), Colleen Teubner (corresponding secretary) and Kieran McCarthy Fell (historian).

 

Teacher Mercedes Peña ably served as the SHS faculty advisor.

Adult Education

Huntington School Board members have re-appointed Kenneth Card to serve as director of the district’s adult education program during the 2010/11 school year. Regina Askerberg was appointed as the program’s secretary and Anna Naccarato was authorized to work as the substitute secretary. All of the appointments are part-time.

Donations to District

The Jack Abrams Intermediate School PTA is donating two portable tennis nets for use on the newly paved playground area during recess and physical education classes.

 

Wacom Corp. is donating one refurbished bamboo craft, pen and touch tablet to the art department.

Budget Transfers

Huntington School Board members approved budget transfers from one account to another to cover costs associated with participation in the crew national championships ($750) and high school guidance department supplies ($10,000).

Bids Awarded

Huntington School Board members awarded a bid for on-site computer support to eSchool Data, LLC at an hourly rate of $128.50. A bid for computer repair was awarded to NPA Computers, Inc. for $49,800. Twin County Driving School, Inc. was awarded the bid for in-car instruction for the district’s driver education program at a per pupil fee of $295. Advantage Music was awarded the bid for musical instrument repairs at a rate of $17.50 per hour.

Disposal of Equipment

The Huntington High School library’s card catalog is going, going, gone. District trustees approved a recommendation to place it on the district’s surplus bid for ultimate disposal. An electronic database has replaced the traditional card catalog.

Consultant Services Contracts

The Huntington School Board approved consultant services contracts with Kathleen Wright in the amount of $95 per hour for teacher of the deaf services to be delivered based upon CSE/IEP recommendations; Lynn Stock in the amount of $300 per workshop to two Teacher Center staff development workshops on differentiated instruction; Barbara Luna in the amount of $300 per workshop for three-hour Teacher Center workshops on instructional strategies that work and differentiated instruction; Heather Thorgersen in the amount of $3,200 for public speaking workshops for first graders.

Alum Passes Away

Charles Burke, a member of Huntington High School’s Class of 1959 passed away June 13 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Northport. He was 69 years old.

 

As a result of his many years of work in the Huntington area as a bartender, Mr. Burke was a recognizable figure in the community.

 

Mr. Burke, was interred in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Huntington, is survived by a sister and brother. Two other brothers predeceased him.
