Luis Cordero Wins Victor Baptiste Essay Contet

Huntington sophomore Luis Fernando Cordero has won first place in the bilingual/native category of the 2010 American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Victor Baptiste Essay Contest.
Mr. Cordero picked up his essay contest high honors award and plaque during a reception at Jericho High School earlier this month.
“In the beginning of the year, schools throughout Long Island were invited to select up to three of the best Spanish essays from each school,” Huntington teacher Mercedes Pena said. Rebecca Silverman and Rosemary Quijada, who are students in an AP Spanish class taught by Ms. Pena also wrote “excellent essays” and represented the high school in the contest.
In a letter sent to Ms. Pena, Juana Adames Pugliano, the essay contest coordinator, wrote, “Thanks again for supporting and encouraging your student’s participation in this contest, and for your constant love and dedication to the Spanish language!”
Last year Huntington Class of 2009 member Anne Alvarado, another one of Ms. Pena’s students, won first place in the essay contest.
Huntington High School teacher Joan Anderson, who Ms. Pena has called a “remarkable” educator, is the president of the AATSP’s Long Island chapter.
