Finley French Students Post Stunning Results
Eight students at J. Taylor Finley Middle School placed in the top ten in Suffolk County in this year’s national French contest. In all, 17 seventh and eighth graders took the prestigious national exam, said their teacher, Dr. Gina Marie Trigian-Molvaut.
Officially known as Le Grand Concours, the contest is sponsored by the American Assn. of Teachers of French. Tens of thousands of students from all 50 states and many foreign countries participate in the written exam, which is a premier event for those in grades 1-2 who are studying French.
At the seventh grade level in Suffolk, Finley’s Leah Butz was sixth, Caitlin Knowles ranked eighth and Justin Edgar-McNerney earned a Certificat de Réussite. Declan Byrne, Kyle Meit and Amy Smith also performed well in the contest.
At the eighth grade level, Hector Alvarado was third in Suffolk and eighth nationally, Lidjna Preval and Marc Feldman were both fifth locally and 10th nationally, Joellen Ceide was sixth in Suffolk, Justin Engelsher was eighth and Hector Rubio was 10th. Bianca Cadet, Kathryn Ingle and Alexandria Mandriota each garnered the Certificat de Réussite. Gabriella Mandriota and Benjamin Nicodem also participated in the prestigious contest and did well.
“We are very proud of the Finley students who participated in this annual contest and we would like to give special recognition to those who ranked with their excellent scores,” Dr. Trigian-Molvaut said.
Just taking the challenging exam is seen as an accomplishment because it attracts many of the best and brightest young minds in the country. The Finley students were presented with their plaques and gold medals for their exceptional performance on the highly regarded exam during a recent awards ceremony.
