New York Hall of Science
Visits Classrooms

There was a buzz around fourth grade classrooms in the Huntington School District when New York Hall of Science educators showed up for a series of one-hour hands on labs that proved how much fun learning really can be.

All fourth graders participated in two labs in their own classrooms. The annual visits and lab program date to 2004 when SEARCH program chairperson-teacher Maryann Daly and Jack Abrams School fourth grade teacher Jim Lauter co-authored a Huntington Foundation grant request that was ultimately awarded and provided funding for the sessions.

“Since then, because of their great success, they are now funded by the science department,” Mrs. Daly. Fourth graders said they enjoyed the labs, titled “All Charged Up” and “Float, Sink, Flink.”

For the past five years, Mrs. Daly has arranged for these science lessons to take place just prior to the state science testing “because they directly relate to the information being asked of the students and because children learn how much fun science can be,” she said.

One fourth grade teacher said the labs are “a great way to actively reinforce the learning that has been taking place in each classroom all year.” The students themselves would heartily agree.

“New York Hall of Science instructors always make comments to me praising how well prepared the Huntington children are in this area by their classroom teachers,” Mrs. Daly said. “It’s a win-win for all.”
