AP Literature Course
Offers a Challenge

The Huntington High School English Department offers a full-year, one credit Advanced Placement literature course. It is recommended for students of exceptional ability in English.

The course has been taught for the past several years by Kelly Quintero. It is popular among those students searching for an academic challenge and looking to attend a top-tier college.

Eligibility for the course is limited to those who completed 11th grade AP English with a grade of 85 or better, 11th grade honors English with a grade of 88 or better or 11th grade Regents English with a grade of 92 or better, along with a Regents score of at least an 85 and recommendations from a guidance counselor and English teachers. Students moving from the Regents level to AP must also enroll in Advanced Composition.

“This course is on a college level and when the student completes the Advanced Placement examination, s/he may receive college standing or credit or both,” according to the high school course bulletin. “The course covers primarily world literature with units on such works as Hamlet and “Crime and Punishment.” Students also study syntax, rhetorical strategies and literary criticism. Written and oral presentations or research and analyses are required. Multiple impromptu and formal essays are required.”

For more information on the course contact Joseph Leavy, district director of humanities, at 673-2079 or jleavy@hufsd.edu.
