Colleen Teubner Earns
Sarah Murphy Award

Is there anything Colleeen Teubner can’t do? Everything the Huntington High School senior touches seems to turn to gold. She’s the “can-do” kid.

Ms. Teubner, who is headed to George Washington University in the fall, recently earned the Sarah Murphy Award for being among the top English students in the Class of 2010. The award carries with it a $50 stipend.

“Due to the rigor of our English language arts honors and Advanced Placement courses, this is an accomplishment that requires great rhetorical and analytical abilities,” high school English teacher Michael Schwendemann said while presenting the award to Ms. Teubner. Mr. Schwendemann represented the English department at the senior academic awards night held earlier this month in the high school auditorium.

“With a rare combination of intellect, diligence, creativity and critical writing skills, Colleen has made this accomplishment seem almost effortless,” Mr. Schwendemann said.

During her high school years, Ms. Teubner soaked up all that Huntington High School has to offer, from playing flute in the marching band and acting in the drama club to earning third place in the state in the prestigious National History Day competition in Cooperstown.

Ms. Teubner, who plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in psychology, has splendidly balanced academic and co-curricular activities and is counted among the most gifted students in this year’s graduating class.

In addition to the Sarah Murphy Award, Ms. Teubner also garnered the Political Action Awards (with a $100 stipend) and a Blue Devil band service award at senior academic awards night.

The teenager said that “family support, motivation and time management” were the “keys” to her success. One gets the feeling Ms. Teubner will find a similar degree of success at George Washington University.
