Teenagers Take to Road for Community Service

A group of Huntington High School students took to the road this week for a three-hour stint of community service at Wyandanch High School. The teenagers are participating in a new community-based program that its organizers hope will “empower children with confidence and self-respect.”

The individuals developing the “Young Leaders” program all have strong ties to the Huntington Station area. They include Kevin Thorbourne, Ron Wilson, Kevin Zaharios and Todd Jamison, who have all coached in Huntington.

The 20 Huntington teenagers making the trek south joined counterparts from nearby communities on a bus to Wyandanch. It was the new group’s first project. The contingent painted, planted flowers and shrubs and performed a general clean-up of the entrance area.

Organizers grilled food onsite to feed the hungry teenagers and keep them energized. Mr. Thorbourne called the initiative “a great opportunity for the students to learn new skills, teach others and have some fun while networking among their peers.”

Adults on the scene were impressed with the attitude and work ethic of the Huntington teenagers. Local businesses supporting the project included Home Depot, Compare Foods and Wells & Wells Bus Co.
