Mary-Liz O’Neill Tapped for National Honors Choir
Mary-Liz O’Neill, a Huntington High School junior, has been selected for the national honors choir and will perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, June 27 at 4 p.m.
Ms. O’Neill has been studying voice seriously since elementary “and has developed a wonderfully impressive repertoire of classical literature,” said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington district director of fine and performing arts. “She has also participated in our school musicals and choir program and demonstrates a great diversity of singing styles.”
MENC: The National Association for Music Education selected Ms. O’Neill, a soprano, for the honors mixed choir. Students from 35 states were named to the honor string ensemble and concert ban, which will also perform on June 27.
Ms. O’Neill has a very long resume of impressive vocal performances across the metropolitan New York area, according to Ms. Fretz. She is in the Julliard prep program and has been a soloist in the New York State summer arts program. The Huntington High School music department recently nominated her as its candidate for the 2010/11 Long Island Scholar Artist Award.
Ms. Fretz called the national honors choir “a very small, select group.” The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is one of America’s most prestigious venues, which is sure to produce a memorable experience for Ms. O’Neill.
