Bengston a Success at School of Visual Arts

The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan is a place for those willing to work hard. It attracts top students from around the world and produces graduates that are held in high esteem. It’s in this atmosphere that 2009 Huntington High School alum Maya Bengston is flourishing.

Ms. Bengston recently completed her freshman year at SVA and is quite pleased with the results. “The year finished up great,” she said. “My final portfolio was very successful and during the spring semester I had an internship with www.stylecaster.com as a production intern.”

The time spent at Style Caster proved valuable for Ms. Bengston. “There I would photograph still clothing and edit them for the website,” she said. “I would also walk around the streets of New York City with a camera and photograph fashionable women for the street style section of the website.”

This summer Ms. Bengston is shuttling back and forth between Huntington and New York City, splitting time at home and in her Manhattan apartment. “In Huntington, I’m lifeguarding at the Huntington Crescent Club,” she said.” She’s also interning several days a week at the Hearst Corporation in New York City.

“I am interning at Studio D, the photography studio for the magazines that Hearst Corporation houses (Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Oprah, Esquire, etc.),” Ms. Bengston said. “In the studio I assist photographers with the set-up and break-down of shoots and get them whatever they need throughout the day.”

The two separate Hearst internships are helping Ms. Bengston grow in knowledge and skill. “I’ve learned so much at both of these internships,” she said. “They’re very different, but both are very helpful and I have met great people along the way.”

At Huntington, Ms. Bengston was in constant motion, starring on the Blue Devil varsity swim team, working closely with photography teacher and yearbook advisor Pam Piffard on The Huntingtonian, excelling in the classroom, contributing wit and personality around the school, pitching in to help at various charity events and being an all-around nice person.

An exciting sophomore year awaits the Huntington teenager. “Next year is going to be very busy,” she said. “I’m not going to have time for internships since I will be in class five days a week. I plan to take in everything I can in class and photograph as much as possible.”
