Huntington Grad an All-American at Georgetown

Scott Kocis is an All-American

Scott Kocis, one of the greatest athletes ever to don a Blue Devil uniform, closed out his Georgetown University lacrosse career by earning All-American honors after a fabulous senior season that saw him score 16 goals and assist on 13 others.

One of three 2010 team captains, Kocis helped lead the Hoyas to a 9-5 record, including 5-1 in Big East play with the lone loss coming to No. 2 ranked Syracuse. “Scott is a hard-nosed player who is equally talented offensively and defensively,” said Eric Triolo, who was one of Kocis’ coaches at Huntington High School. “He’s a tough competitor.”

Georgetown learned just how good Kocis can be after the 6’4, 215 lb. star battled his way through injuries to become one of the top players in the country. This year he found himself in an elite group when he was nominated for the Tewaaraton Award, presented annually to the sport’s top player. “Scott can really do it all on the lacrosse field,” Triolo said.

After picking up his Georgetown diploma this past May, Kocis joined the roster of the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse. The team had earlier selected him in the professional league’s draft.

As a Georgetown senior, Kocis enjoyed the best season of his collegiate career, tying for third on the team in goals and notching 29 points in all. He was injured for almost his entire sophomore season, but still managed to appear in 45 games for the Hoyas over the past four years, with 44 goals and 22 assists against some very tough competition.

Kocis’ scholastic years with the Blue Devils were spectacular and he was named Long Island Player of the year by News 12. A two-time high school All-American, he was the third ranked recruit in the country signing with Duke University.

After the Duke program was rocked with what turned out to be completely unfounded “rape” allegations that ultimately resulted in the disbarment and imprisonment of the district attorney handling the case, Kocis secured his release from the letter of intent he signed and accepted a scholarship to Georgetown.

As a Huntington senior he tallied 44 goals and 43 assists and won 85 percent of his face-offs. During his Blue Devil career he contributed 109 goals and 107 assists, helping the team win the 2005 and 2006 New York State Class B championships. Huntington went 43-0 over Kocis’ junior and senior seasons.

In addition the lacrosse, Kocis played on the football, basketball and golf teams at Huntington and was in the National Honor Society. On the gridiron, he earned all-Division and Academic all-Division honors, contributing to the successful drive for Suffolk and Long Island crowns.

“All of us are proud of Scott,” Triolo said.
