Blue Devil Baseball Puts
Two on All-League Squad

Two Huntington High School varsity baseball players earned All-League honors, but the Blue Devils closed out the season with a 4-16 record under head coach Greg Kalkau.
Eighth grader Kevin Pimental and junior Vincent McCarty shined on the way to grabbing a spot on the All-League team. Senior Dan Smith was named Academic All-League for his sterling play on the field and exceptional performance in the classroom.
Pimental (SS/RHP) batted .333 with 22 hits, 17 runs scored and eights runs batted in. Kalkau called him the “most talented player.” The youngster turned in a series of incredible performances on the mound, including a no-hitter against Comsewogue.
McCarty (3B/RHP) banged out 37 hits, drove in 22 runs and compiled a .528 batting average. Kalkau called the teenager a “winner” and said he “wanted the ball at all times.”
Jimmy Oliva (2B/RHP) and catcher Rob Fiato also enjoyed strong seasons. Oliva batted .387 with 24 hits and 12 RBIs. Fiato collected 21 hits, 14 RBIs and a .318 batting average.
Kalkau called Oliva a “natural fielder” and said the junior “leads with his play.” Fiato, a freshman who is loaded with potential, proved to be a “leader on and off the field,” the coach said.
This year’s Blue Devil team was comprised of a “young cast,” Kalkau said. “There’s a lot to build with towards the future and they always worked hard in practice,” added the coach.
Kalkau said many of Huntington’s league foes had senior-laden rosters so the Blue Devils “should be able to compete with each team” next spring.
