Blue Devil Girls’ Fencers Win Gold
The Blue Devils women’s epee team captured the gold medal at the Huntington Relay Carnival last Saturday. The huge event featured more than 300 fencers from eight Suffolk high schools as well as from Concord-Carlisle High School in Massachusetts. Huntington fielded 16 squads in nine separate categories.
The Blue Devils’ top seeded women’s epee team of seniors Johanna Clifford and Alanna Tieman and juniors Mia Rienzo and Olivia Weller defeated squads from Commack and Walt Whitman before topping Ward Melville in the final.
Weller began the finals by giving Huntington a 5-0 lead in the 45-point contest and Clifford, Tieman and Rienzo helped build a double-digit advantage that the Blue Devils never relinquished. Tieman and Rienzo were particularly strong against Ward Melville’s top epee. Weller won the team’s final seven points for a 45-34 victory.
Two other Blue Devil squads also took first-place honors in their categories. Freshmen Sydney Andree, Maggie Askerberg, Taylor Choy, Marissa Pashkin and Melissa Rosenberg captured the novice women’s foil. And the “A” team of freshmen Kelly Askerberg, Andrea Cerini and Melanie Grossman won in novice women’s sabre.
In other results, the men’s “A” epee squad of seniors Daniel Lobasso and Tyler May and junior John Ferraiolo finished fifth and the “B” team of senior Alexander Chisholm, sophomore Alex Jamison and freshmen James Ferraiolo and Richard Hermer-Fried was 11th.
In women’s epee, the “B” team of junior Rebecca Deegan, sophomores Marie Clifford and Kristin Hartman and freshman Anna Wertheim came in 10th. In novice women’s epee, freshmen Carly Glowacky, Judy Greco, Kathryn Petrozzo and Katelyn Postiglione finished second.
In women’s foil, the “A” team of seniors Lena Freed and Brittany Pucci-Schmitz, junior Cody Jacobs and sophomore Alexandra Martinolich finished sixth. The “B” team consisting of junior Nellie Derbyshire, sophomore Marissa Schedler and eighth-graders Sibilla Maiarelli and Brianna Kirkland was 11th.
In men’s foil, the “A” team of junior Sean Harkins and sophomores Nicolas Maiarelli and Robert Folan finished eighth and the “B” team of seniors Taylor Fritts and Dan Gallagher and sophomore Jason Chisolm was 12th.
In women’s sabre, the “A” team of juniors Dylan Tuozzo and Olivia Johnson and freshmen Joey Tuozzo and Katia DeSimone finished 11th and the “B” team of junior Shayne Larkin, sophomore Holly Flores and freshmen Kelly Askerberg and Andrea Cerini was 12th.
In men’s sabre, the “A” team of senior Leif Drace and juniors Dante Corrocher and Connor Purcell finished 11th and the “B” team of junior Steven Correll and freshmen Brent Flippini and Scott Garafolo grabbed 12th place.
