Blue Devil Sports News

The Huntington girls’ basketball team followed up a solid victory at home over Islip by traveling to Port Jefferson Station two days later and toppling host Comsewogue, 32-26 in an impressive defensive effort.

The Blue Devils led 7-2 after eight minutes of play before the Warriors ignited their office in the second quarter, outscoring Huntington 13-7 and taking a 15-14 halftime lead. But, the Blue Devils used a smothering defense to hold Comsewogue to just two points in the third quarter and just 11 in the entire second half, en route to a much needed win as the regular season enters its final phase.

Jackie Waldron led Huntington with 12 points, all coming on three-point baskets, and 10 rebounds. Raynisha Witherspoon added eight points and 10 rebounds.

With the Blue Devils nursing a 28-26 lead in the final 30 seconds, Witherspoon dropped in a pair of free throws and then Colleen Wright raced to the basket for a lay-up with about 20 seconds left on the clock to secure the victory.

Emma Hayes-Hurley connected for six points. Wright, Meredith McCourt and Lauren Visbal combined for another six points.

Sayville Tops Huntington on Mat

Visiting Sayville upset the Huntington wrestling team in a close meet, 30-28. The Blue Devils’ victories came from Nigel McNeil, Maurice Loadholt, Louis Puca and Ryan Fox and via a forfeit by the Golden Flashes at 125 lbs.

Huntington Can’t Hold On

Despite trailing throughout most of the game, the Huntington boys’ basketball team clawed its way back several times and held a two point lead with less than three minutes to play before various mishaps and near-perfect shooting from the foul line by Comsewogue doomed the Blue Devils.

Huntington was in danger of being run off the court early before going on a run of its own and closing the gap to 14-11 by the end of the first quarter. The Blue Devils hung tight during a sometimes wild second quarter before heading into halftime trailing 33-28. A well-played third quarter helped Huntington cut its deficit to two points, 46-44. Then, after a seesaw battle, the Blue Devils gained their first lead of the game with less than a handful of minutes remaining, 59-57. But, the Warriors responded by going on a 10-4 run, including hitting 7-of-9 free throws in the final 90 seconds to win the game.

John McCarthy and Jeremy Rhodes each had 17 points for Huntington. John Patron added 15 points.

The Blue Devils built an 11-point lead in the first eight minutes of play, 16-5, but were outscored the rest of the way by the Buccaneers, 59-37.
