Like Old Times for Blue Devil Girls

It was like old times for the Huntington girls’ basketball team as the Blue Devils cruised to a 21-point victory, topping visiting Islip, 56-35. Even “Cotton Eye Joe” was blaring over the public address system.
This has been a challenging winter for Huntington head coach Brad Reminick and his squad. After a multi-year run that saw the Blue Devils ranked among the state’s best and three straight trips to the Suffolk finals, the program is rebuilding. The entire starting line-up graduated last June and the transition has been difficult at times.
But, on this night, victory was in the air early as Huntington jumped out to a large lead in the opening minutes. After one quarter, the Blue Devils had an 18-7 advantage and were ahead at halftime, 32-11.
Four Huntington players scored in double figures led by 5’5 freshman Raynisha Witherspoon who dropped in 13 points and crashed the boards for 10 rebounds. Junior Jackie Waldron added 12 points and senior Lauren Visbal contributed another 11.
The Blue Devils are a work in progress as Reminick pushes the group each day in practice and insists on hard play at all times on the court. Against Islip, it all clicked as timely shooting and aggressive defense produced a much needed win.
Junior Emma Hayes-Hurley put together a nice night, too, scoring 10 points and displaying some fancy dribbling and passing. Colleen Wright, Meredith McCourt and Sarah Ehrman combined for another 10 points.
Reminick is clearly hoping his team keeps winning as he prods the Blue Devils toward qualifying for the playoffs. As the starting five becomes more comfortable playing alongside each other, anything is possible.
