Presentation on District Facilities Monday Night

As the Huntington School Board continues to explore its future facilities needs and options, Roger Smith of Burton Behrendt Smith, an architectural and engineering firm, will make a facilities planning presentation to trustees at a public meeting Monday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams Intermediate School auditorium.

Mr. Smith will discuss the findings of a recent three-day inspection of the former Robert K. Toaz Junior High School, located at 300 Nassau Road and his ideas on how it could be reconverted for use as a public school. The district is exploring the possible reacquisition of the 11.5 acre site and building, which it operated as a school from September 1939 through June 1982.

Trustees and several other district officials also toured Toaz earlier this month. School Board members will also discuss what they found during their time inside the nearly 120,000 square foot structure that was built by the federal Depression-era WPA and jointly funded by it and the district. A large addition to north side of the building was erected in 1969-70.

Toaz was named in honor of the longest serving superintendent in district history and more than 10,000 students were educated in its classrooms during its more than four decades of service to the community.

Mr. Smith’s presentation is expected to include possible solutions to the space crunch being experienced across the district, including at all four primary school buildings.
