Bindrim Goes Undefeated for Blue Devil JV

Sophomore Samantha Bindrim went 11-0, but the Huntington JV girls’ tennis team finished with an overall record of 4-8 under head coach Eric Mininni.

A lack of roster depth forced Huntington to forfeit some positions during individual meets, which Mininni said cost the Blue Devils several additional wins on the team’s record. He wants to prevent that from happening next fall by stepping up recruiting and bringing more players into the program.

Although the 10-player squad struggled at times last fall, Mininni said they were “a nice group of girls who enjoyed played tennis and being part of a team.”

Bindrim was simply stellar and Mininni called her “the rock of the team” who led the Blue Devils to their four victories.

Freshman Liz Whitcher also played well, compiling an 8-3 mark. “Liz is a real up-and-coming player who played exceptionally well all year,” Mininni said. “She is a real coachable kid and I think she has a bright future.”

The Blue Devils lost four meets by a 4-3 score. The highlight of the season rebounded from a 4-3 season-opening loss to Walt Whitman to win the second match-up between the teams, 5-2. It was especially sweet, Mininni said “since we had to forfeit No. 3 doubles. The team played well and came together for a great victory.”

Blue Devil Aces: Looking ahead to next fall, Mininni said it will be “difficult to say who will be staying on the junior varsity, but we will definitely be a work in progress” . . . Players are being given off-season training opportunities and encouraged to play as much as possible in anticipation of the first day of practice next August.
