The Huntington boys’ basketball team notched a thrilling one-point overtime victory over host Sayville, 57-56. John Patron scored 20 points for the Blue Devils and Jeremy Rhodes pumped in 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

 

The teams were evenly matched throughout last Saturday’s contest, with Huntington holding a 12-11 advantage after one quarter and leading 24-23 at halftime. The Blue Devils led by three, 35-32, heading into the final eight minutes, but the Golden Flashes rallied to tie the score on a three-point basket at the buzzer to force the game into overtime.

 

Huntington trailed 56-55 with just seconds remaining before freshman Trevon Brown dribbled from coast-to-coast and hit the game-winning shot with just 1.4 seconds showing on the scoreboard. Brown finished the game with eight points. Jack Cutrone, Shaquan Raines and Jack Forster combined for 11 points.

Blue Devils Get Five Pins

 

The Huntington wrestling team downed Eastport-South Manor last Friday night in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium, 43-27. Nigel McNeil, Damon McQueen, T.J. Wilson, Louis Puca and Nick Lupi pinned there opponents. Maurice Loadholt and Ryan Fox earned technical falls and Duncan Murchison battled to an exciting 3-2 decision over Ryan Cutler at 189 lbs.

Visbal Scores 12

Huntington senior Lauren Visbal scored 12 points and crashed the boards for 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Devil girls’ basketball team over host Rocky Point, 41-29.

 

Huntington trailed 8-7 after one quarter but went on a 19-1 second quarter run to take a commanding 26-9 lead. Emma Hayes-Hurley scored 10 points and dished out seven assists. Jackie Waldon also had 10 points and Meredith McCourt and Raynisha Witherspoon combined for another nine points.

Goldstein is Swift

Sophomore Jake Goldstein captured the 100m fly and the 100m backstroke to lift the Huntington boys’ swimming team over rival Harborfields, 92-84. Goldstein is one of the top swimmers in the state this winter.

McQueen Named MOW

Damon McQueen was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler at last Saturday’s Ted Peterson Tournament at Island Trees High School. The Huntington star earned a major decision (18-5) in the finals to capture the 125 lb. weight class title. Teammates Nigel McNeil (112) and Ryan Fox (171) also won crowns, picked up pins in the championship round. T.J. Wilson took second place at 152 lbs. McNeil was presented with the Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time Award after decking three foes in 3:35.

 

The Blue Devils finished fourth in the team standings with 193.5 points, trailing Massapequa (285.5), Uniondale (267) and Plainedge (229.5). Rounding out the field were Island Trees (129), Freeport (128.5), Mepham (107), Babylon (66), West Hempstead (19), Island Trees “B” team (10) and Franklin Delano Roosevelt-NYC (7).

First Half Woes Doom Blue Devils

Host Kings Park played at a blistering pace in the first half, effectively dooming the Huntington girls’ basketball team, 45-35. The Blue Devils found themselves tailing by eight points after one quarter and Huntington was down by even more at halftime, 30-12.

 

Jackie Waldron scored 18 points for the Blue Devils. Meredith McCourt and Lauren Visbal combined for another 13 points. Huntington managed to outscore Kings Park in the second half, 23-15.

Rare League Mat Loss

The Huntington wrestling team sustained a rare league loss when it was edged by host Kings Park, 30-27. It was the first dual meet of the season for the Blue Devils.

 

T.J. Wilson (4:32) and Louis Puca (2:24) earned pins and Damon McQueen won by technical fall in 4:24. Nigel McNeil grappled to an 11-2 major decision. Duncan Murchison fought to a 9-5 decision. Ryan Fox grabbed one of the most exciting victories of the afternoon when he captured a 10-8 decision in overtime at 189 lbs.

Rough Third Quarter

The Kings Park boys’ basketball team ran past host Huntington, 53-42, on the strength of a strong third quarter that saw the Kingsmen outscore the Blue Devils, 16-2.

 

Huntington led after one quarter, 10-8 but trailed narrowly at halftime, 24-23. Then the roof caved in as Kings Park scored 16-of-the 18 points that went through the two hoops in the third frame.

 

Tyre Brown led the Blue Devils with 12 points. Shaquan Raines and Jeremy Rhodes each added 10 points, respectively. John Patron dropped in another nine and Jack Forster added one point from the foul line.

This One Hurt

Every loss hurts the team on the short end of the score, but this one particularly stung. The Huntington girls’ basketball team dropped a 54-39 verdict to Sayville last Saturday morning. The Golden Flashes outscored the Blue Devils 26-18 in the second half and 40-26 over the final three quarters of play. Huntington was led by Jackie Waldron’s 13 points. Lauren Visbal added nine points.

 

The game, played in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium before a crowd of about 100, was viewed as a “must win” as the Blue Devils work to qualify for a playoff spot. Huntington looked inspired in the first quarter, trailing by one point after eight minutes, 14-13. But, Sayville steadily pulled away over the finals 24 minutes.
