African Acrobats Show Coming to Huntington

The African Acrobats, direct from Kenya, are coming to the Huntington High School stage on Sunday, January 31 for a show sponsored by the district’s Arts-in-Education committee and the Organization of Music Parents of Huntington.

Showtime is 2 p.m. but pre-show activities that are sure to be a hit with children, will commence at 1 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.

The five-person African Acrobats group will feature gymnastics, limbo, contortions, rope jumping, balancing, juggling, human pyramid building and hoop diving. The show is being billed as “fun for all ages.”

The event marks the fifth annual fundraiser for the Huntington School District Arts-in-Ed program, which has become an integral part of the educational experience at all grade levels in the district. The afternoon will include snacks, raffles and a variety of fun activities for children. Proceeds from the show will supplement other Arts-in-Ed funding to meet annual programming costs.

The Huntington PTA Council’s Arts-in-Education committee researches and plans cultural arts and exploratory programs linked directly to core curriculum concepts and skills. Students have participated in a wide range of experiences, from seeing their own pieces of creative writing performed by professional actors and chatting with famous authors to working with real scientists and “meeting” characters from American history.

Arts-in-Ed program presentations are designed to enhance the study of children’s literature, the humanities, mathematics, science, fine and performing arts, health and character education. Students are also provided opportunities to visit and learn about the unique historical sites and organizations throughout Huntington. There is a special emphasis on striving to provide programs for single grade levels that connect with specific curriculum objectives.

Huntington students can purchase tickets in advance of the January 31 show by returning a check payable to “OOMPAH for AIE” to their respective school’s PTA mailbox via their classroom teacher. The envelope should be marked “Arts-in-Ed.”

Huntington High School is located at the intersection of Oakwood and McKay Roads in Huntington. The show will be held in the school’s spacious and comfortable auditorium. The site is fully handicapped accessible.
