Finley Field Hockey Looks to Future
The field hockey team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School is typically very competitive. But, this past season the Falcons had many new players and that made for a learning experience.
The 33-member squad included 23 seventh graders. That youth bodes well for the future but resulted in a 2-4-4 record this season. The team’s veteran coach, Nancy Conlon, called her players “hard working, fun and very willing to learn.”
Finley was captained by Kira Bergman, Olivia Palmer, Julianna Kimchy and Chelsea Holmes. The highlight of the year was a night game at Walt Whitman High School against Stimson Middle School that resulted in a scoreless tie.
Bergman led the Falcons with three goals. Talented seventh grade goalie Tara Byrne recorded 51 saves. Eighth grade halfbacks Kathryn Gerdes, Caroline Berjka and Sibilla Mairarelli were “excellent defenders with great skills and determination,” Conlon said.
Bergman was “great at breakaways” and had “powerful drives,” the coach said. Conlon was also high on Byrne who was “quick on her feet.”
With nearly two dozen players eligible to return next fall, Finley’s field hockey prospects look very good at this point.
