Greenidge is MVP of Blue Devil
JV Volleyball
Despite a 1-12 record, the Huntington JV girls’ volleyball team kept its collective head up. Coached by Lynn Hefele and captained by Isabelle Senat, Lydia Aparicio and Rebecca Leach, the seven-member Blue Devil squad never quit.
“This year’s team made tremendous strides from the beginning of the season to the end,” Hefele said. “If we were to play each team one more time, we would have made the breakthrough to winning.”
Freshman Samantha Greenidge was the team’s most valuable player. “She is the ideal athlete that asks questions and takes direction to improve her game,” Hefele said. “Samantha has great setter hands and is becoming a leader on the court. Her strong serving skills have kept us in the game on several occasions. Her dedication to the team will serve the program well in the years to come.”
The highlight of the season came when the Blue Devils avenged an earlier 2-1 loss to Comsewogue by topping the Warriors, 2-1 in a rematch in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. “Krista Castillo and Hayley Brown had great serving stats,” Hefele said. Castillo served for 15 points and Brown, who along with Greenidge and Senat was among the top three players on the squad, served up another 11 points over the course of three games.
Senat, a junior who was participating in the sport for the first time, was Huntington’s most improved player. She “has picked up the important skills of passing, serving and spiking,” Hefele said. “She is beginning to move and react instinctively like a volleyball player and will be a player to watch on next year’s varsity.”
