A Real Thriller
It was a real donnybrook but when the smoke had finally cleared the Huntington boys’ basketball team was on the short end of the score as host Comsewogue topped the Blue Devils in overtime, 51-49.
Huntington trailed at halftime, 23-19, but played well in the second half, building a four point lead midway through the final frame. But, the Blue Devils couldn’t hold on for the victory.
John Patron led Huntington with 19 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Shaquan Rains added 17 points and Tre Brown pumped in another 15. Sophomore John McCarthy connected for six points.
Run falls Short
The Huntington girls’ basketball team made a few runs, but a flat third quarter doomed the Blue Devils in a 46-34 loss at home to Comsewogue.
The Warriors struck first with a string of points, but Huntington came charging back, trailing 9-8 after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime. Comsewogue outscored the Blue Devils in the third quarter, 16-8, effectively putting the game on ice.
Raynisha Witherspoon scored 11 points and Lauren Visbal added 10. Emma Hayes-Hurley (six), Meredith McCourt (five) and Jackie Waldron (two) also scored.
Wrestlers are Impressive

Patron is Unstoppable
The Huntington boys’ basketball team rallied from a first half deficit to take a commanding nine-point second half lead only to have to hang on for a one-point victory over visiting Centereach, 43-42.
John Patron led the Blue Devils with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore John McCarthy came up big with a pair of fourth quarter three-point baskets that kept Huntington in the lead. Tre Brown dished out eight assists and Shaquan Rains scored six points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Blue Devils trailed 13-8 after the first eight minutes of play and were down 21-19 at the half. But, a 14-7 third quarter run put Huntington in the lead for good. Despite eventually building a large lead, the Men in Blue couldn’t put the game on ice and Centereach clawed back making the last three minutes of the game especially exciting for the loud crowd of about 200 fans.
Field Hockey Stars
Huntington sophomores Brielle Blatt and Jenny Duffy and freshmen sisters Maggie and Kelly Askerberg were among the top players on last fall’s JV field hockey team, according the head coach Nancy Wilson.
Blatt plays defensive center back. Wilson described her as a “solid defender with strong stick skills and a dominant attitude leading the team with saves and transition play.” Wilson said that Duffy, who played forward for the Blue Devils, has “strong speed and aggressive go-to-the ball skills”
The Askerbergs also shined with “wonderful cutting and movement impacting teams’ ball possession,” Wilson said. The sisters have a “strong presence on the field,” the coach added.
Blue Devils Make Run
With two Huntington starters on the bench, the Deer Park boys’ basketball team wasted no time in opening up a huge lead, scoring the first 11 points of the game.
The Blue Devils finally regrouped and went on a 13-7 run to pull within five points by the end of the first quarter. But, then Deer Park did it again, opening up a bulging 35-19 advantage by halftime.
You have to give Huntington credit, though. The Men in Blue found a way to battle back in the second half. Several spurts of good shooting and fine rebounding helped the Blue Devils narrow their disadvantage to six points, before Deer Park went on another tear and put them game away, 64-50.
John Patron led Huntington with 18 points and Shaquan Rains added 15. John McCarthy hit a pair of three-points and scored eight points. Jeremy Rhodes dropped in five.
