Goldstein Qualifies for State Swimming Championships
Jake Goldstein hopes the second time will be a charm. The Huntington High School sophomore will compete in two events at the state swimming championships this Friday and Saturday at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
Goldstein, who is coached by Gil Smith, finished second in the Section XI state qualifying meet in both the 200-yard IM (1:57.60) and the 100-yard breaststroke (59.96). The times met this year’s state qualifying standards.
Last year as a freshman, Goldstein earned All-League and All-County honors in the 100-yard breaststroke and reached the state championships, where he finished 24th against some stiff competition. He’s clearly looking to improve on that performance this weekend.
The 10th grader will leave for Buffalo on Thursday and have a practice session that same night between 6-8 p.m. Preliminaries begin Friday at 12 noon.
