Science Fairs Coming to Huntington

With the study of science flourishing in the Huntington School District, all elementary school age students will be participating in their respective building’s science fair, working on class and/or individual projects.

David Casamento said the science fair program “is a little more expanded this year than in years past.” All students from kindergarten through fourth grade will do a class science fair project. Fifth graders will work in small groups and develop four or five projects per class on that level. Sixth graders will create individual projects with the assistance of their teacher.

“In addition, all students in grade K-5 will have the option to perform an individual science fair project,” Mr. Casamento said. “Students who choose this option will be judged in their building and the winner of each grade in each building will be allowed to compete in the Brookhaven Elementary Science Fair at Brookhaven National Lab on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Every building will be hosting a science fair night this year as well.”

Woodhull Intermediate School will kick-off the string of science fairs with one on March 9. Another one will be held at Jack Abrams Intermediate School on March 22. Jefferson, Flower Hill, Southdown and Washington primary schools are all holding their science fairs on March 23.

The fairs will be held during late afternoon or evening hours so parents can attend. In addition, classes will be able to view all the projects throughout the school day.
